Hi Paul, Nice strait looking car. Did you replace the upper front cross member. From your photo, I see you have re- stamped the serial # through the paint.? Has your car sold?

Car returns to ebay 9/26/05
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-E-Type-XKE-4-2L-1965-Jaguar-65-4-2L-E-type-XKE-Co ...
Current bid $50,000.00 (Reserve met), 5 bids, 8 days left in auction. Car located in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

Sellers description:
An investment quality, all numbers matching, extensively documented, 1965 Jaguar 4.2L Series 1, covered headlight, open two-seater roadster (OTS) in great condition with just over 46,000 fully documented miles from new.

A California black plate car its entire life until I purchased it in July 2004 and shipped it here to Charlotte, North Carolina.

This car has been driven roughly 3,000 miles since a body on restoration was completed in the early ‘90’s. At that time the car was painted, the interior was replaced, the top end of the engine was rebuilt, chrome was re-done, tranny, clutch, and a bunch of other mechanical and electrical items were freshened up. Since then it has only been driven about 3,000 miles—a fact documented by multiple service receipts showing the very slow progression of mileage over the years. I have driven it a total of 697 miles since purchasing it 15 months ago.

Car was originally ordered as ”opalescent dark green with green suede interior” per the original receipts. However, it appears that an opalescent green with black interior was available immediately so the buyer took that one. The car was delivered here in the green/black combination. Car is currently dark green with tan leather interior which is a much more attractive combo than the original green/black.

You will not believe the documentation on this car. I have every piece of paper including the original purchase documents from British Motor Car, 1200 Van Ness, San Francisco, California. Also included is the original correspondence between Jaguar Coventry and the first owner, the original shipping & marine insurance documents when the car was loaded on to the Steamship “SS Pretoria” (car arrived in California on 8/10/65), the American Express Company wire transfer documents for payment, every single service and restoration receipt from new which certifies the mileage as correct and original, copies of previous owners registrations, registration renewals, and a few titles, an original log book from the first owner with the dates, locations, and even the prices paid for gas and oil at very fill-up! This handwritten log book goes from 8/18/65 to 5/15/93 (with a few gaps). This documentation includes service receipts as recent as 6/10/05 when I did some work which will be detailed later.

I even have the original British registration/license plate originally mounted on the car when it left the factory and the original pair of California “black plate” license plates.

You can tell from the receipts that this car was meticulously maintained its entire life. Whatever the car needed it was either repaired or replaced quickly and with no expense spared. There are tens of thousands of dollars of detailed receipts in the binder.

Numbers matching: All numbers match the data plate and they also match original written Jaguar documentation. Car is chassis #1E11204 with engine #7E4751-9, Body #4e2521, and Gearbox#EJ3883. I tried to show the engine number in the photos but it didn’t come out very well. I guarantee it matches.

Cosmetic Condition:
This car has been garaged it’s entire life and it shows. The great thing about this car is that it looks and runs great but the condition is not so perfect that you feel nervous about driving it.

Body: 9-9.5/10. No rust that I can see anywhere, no bubbles or paint loss in the typical areas near the door corners, sills, or wheel wells. One very shallow ding on the top of the rear trunk lid.

Paint: 8.5/10. Still looks great, even in the sun, there’s a few small (1/6th-1/8th inch) paint dings, faint surface scratches, and small areas of dullness. Some paint has chipped in the area where the engine rubber seal is mounted the the body just in front of the windshield. Is only obvious when the hood/front is open. Exactly what you would expect from a 10yr old paint job on a car that has been stored indoors its entire life. It looks awesome but I want to be detailed in my descriptions.

Interior: 8.5-9/10. Also looks great with almost no wear on dash, instrument panel, and door panels. Typical wear on seats with the driver’s seat showing a little more wear. Carpets are in excellent condition. Some scuffs on top of seats from the top hitting them when it is being put up and down. There is a crack in the plastic strip below the toggle switches with the writing on it. Probably a $10-20 dollar fix.

Trunk: 9.5/10. Totally original, never restored and near perfect.

Tires & Wheels: 9.5/10. Fresh tires (Pirelli P4000) in the last 700 miles including the spare which has not been on the road since the tires were replaced. Chrome wire wheels that are mounted on the car are in great condition. Some minor dings on the knock-off spinners. The wire wheel spare in the trunk is in decent condition and it appears that it was not re-chromed when the other four were.

Engine & Engine Compartment: 8.5/10. Also totally original from the factory—never re-painted, etc. Shows very modest wear when you consider that this is a 40 year old car.

Top and top cover: 9.0/10. The top (tonneau) cover was replaced in 2003 and is in great condition. The only issue is that the tabs for the cover don;t line up perfectly with the catches on the car. I've been putting the tabs under the chrome strip and that works perfectly.

The top appears to be new as well but I can not find the specific date in the receipts. From the condition I truly believed that it is less than 5yrs old too. Minor discoloration or staining on the inside of the top (visible only when looking up when seated in the car). The rear plastic window is clear and not yellowed.

Custom car cover: 10/10. Brand new and included with your purchase.

Mechanical Condition:
As I said earlier this car was always repaired immediately if something went wrong. It is currently in excellent mechanical condition. The motor starts right up and runs beautifully. The clutch works great and the transmission shifts smoothly in all gears. The car is fast and a lot of fun to drive.

The cooling system was completely upgraded by a previous owner in July 2001 including the installation of electric fans. I have driven the car in 100 degree heat in Charlotte in traffic with no overheating problems.

During my 15 month ownership I have completed the following repairs: new alternator, re-sealed oil pan, replaced thermostat housing gasket, rebuilt the brake calipers, re-lined the brake pistons with stainless steel, flushed brake system, replaced brake pads, replaced all four shocks, and the fluids have all been changed about every 300 miles. If there are any fluid leaks they are minor and sporadic. I’ve had the typical leak areas re-sealed during my ownership.

Financials:
I purchased the car from European Collectibles in Costa Mesa, CA in July of 2004 for $58,000. They are known for dealing in only the highest quality vintage Jaguars, Porsches, and exotics. Since then I have put about $4k into the car, not including the cost to ship it here and the brand new car cover.

My reserve is $50,000 and the “buy it now price” is $56,500. Bidding starts at $30,000. I am confident that you will not be able to find a car with this level of documentation, in this condition, for this price anywhere else.

Clear North Carolina title.
Another great thing about this car is that if you ever decide to do a full blown restoration after enjoying it for a few years you have a car with the original numbers matching chassis and engine and the extensive documentation that can stand up to the additional investment. This is a collector’s dream.
