Car to be at auction 9/16
www.dragoneauctions.com/1968-jaguar-xke-series-1-ots
Dragone auction, Boston, Massachusetts 9/24
As the last year for the Series 1 it also offers all of the superior mechanicals that go with a highly refined design. Finished in Signal Red, this could be the perfect color for a classic roadster. It rides on a set of factory wire wheels and as an earlier XKE has the wrap-around metal bumpers. As a latter Series 1 it also features all of the characteristics that were found those built from 1965-1967 including a 4.2 liter twin cam six, a fully synchronized transmission, reclining seats, an alternator instead of a generator, and the big switch from positive to negative ground electrical system. Brakes were also upgraded and all of these refinements meant the latter Series 1 XKEs were a very reliable car. Of course, all of these refinements were mechanical in nature and the appearance of the E-Type did not change from its introduction. This example is nicely sorted with an engine compartment that's not concours quality, but is clean and nicely detailed in all areas. The powerful roar from its twin cam six is a sound that is very distinctive on the open road. The interior also presents in fine condition with all upholstery, door panels, carpet, dashboard, and interior trim in good condition. Indeed, the Series 1 is a true "driver's car" with a beautiful wood steering wheel and large gauges set directly ahead for the true Grand Touring experience.
Jaguar's XKE is perhaps the most iconic sports car ever built. When Sir William Lyons went ahead with its production he literally changed the face of spirited performance in a European car. Nothing could be better than a fine summer day spent in an XKE roadster with the top down. For a driving experience like no other, this Series 1 is a true sports car that's ready for the open road.

This 1968 Jaguar XKE Series 1.5 roadster is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission and finished in Signal Red over black leather. The car is equipped with a black soft top, a soft top boot, sealed-beam open headlights, 15″ wire-spoke steel wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, triple windshield wipers, an Alpine cassette radio, and a heater. It was refurbished in the early 1990s and was acquired by the seller in 2019. Subsequent work has since involved installing Wilwood front brakes and an aluminum water pump as well as replacing the tires, brake master cylinder and servo, ball joints, clutch cylinders, alternator, and distributor cap and rotor. This XKE Series 1.5 roadster is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, the owner’s manual, service records, a car cover, and a Massachusetts title in the seller’s name.
The Series 1.5 E-Types featured exposed headlights shared with Series II cars but retained Series I equipment such as a small front grille opening, turn signals mounted above the front bumper, and taillights situated above the split rear bumper. This example came finished from the factory in Signal Red and was repainted during the refurbishment in the early 1990s. Additional equipment includes a black soft top, a soft top boot, sealed-beam open headlights, a louvered clamshell hood, wraparound chrome bumpers, a driver-side mirror, triple windshield wipers, and dual exhaust outlets.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by rounded knock-offs and were mounted with 205/65 BFGoodridge Silverstown Radial Redline tires under current ownership. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors and the car rides on Koni shocks. Wilwood front brakes with red-finished calipers were installed since the seller’s acquisition, along with a replacement master cylinder, brake booster, rear calipers, and ball joints.
The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in black leather along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Interior appointments include black vinyl dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, an Alpine cassette radio, and a heater.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 33k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 4.2-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors and electronic ignition, and it was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque. An aluminum water pump and a replacement alternator were installed in 2021. The distributor cap, rotor, and ignition wires were replaced in 2023.
Engine stamping 7E17756-9 and a corresponding number is listed on the chassis plate as well as the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a full-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission. The clutch hydraulic cylinders were replaced under current ownership. A stainless-steel dual exhaust system has been installed.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers as well as the build and dispatch dates.
The Massachusetts title carries an “Odometer Discrepancy – Not Actual Mileage” brand.
