This 1966 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was acquired by the prior owner as a disassembled project in 1988 and was subsequently repainted in Carmen Red. The car was then restored in California between 1991 and 1993 and was purchased by the family of its current owner in 1998. Power is provided by a 4.2-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. This XKE Series I roadster is now offered by Gasoline Alley Garage, a BaT Local Partner, on behalf of the current owner with a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, restoration and service records, and a clean California title in the owner’s name, listing it as a 1967 model year.

The Series I E-Types were equipped with covered headlights and taillights mounted above the chrome rear bumpers. This example came finished from the factory in Pale Primrose Yellow and was repainted in Carmen Red in 1989, and a replacement tan soft top was installed during the restoration. The seller notes various paint flaws and pitting on the chrome taillight surrounds.

The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and were mounted with GT Radial Touring VPlus tires in 2021. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors.

The cabin was reupholstered during the restoration in tan leather, and replacement carpets, seat cushions, soundproofing, and seatbelts were installed. The dash pad was also replaced. The seller notes that the clock doesn’t work, the driver’s seat back has scuffs, and the passenger seat back is torn on the top. The carpets are loose and the left sun visor is wrinkled.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation that was rebuilt and re-calibrated during the restoration, including a 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 71k miles, which is not considered to be accurate. Approximately 2,500 miles were added under current ownership, and total mileage is unknown

The 4.2-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt during the restoration, and the fuel system and cooling system were overhauled.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a full-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The transmission was rebuilt and the clutch replaced during the restoration.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers as well as a build date of October 19, 1966.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
