1967 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Roadster

A true exemplar of originality!

Estimate £100,000 - £120,000

Registration No: HSR 937E

Chassis No: 1E14763

MOT: Exempt

A true exemplar of originality, having spent thirty years in an underground garage in Arizona!

Delivered new through Jaguar Cars New York to Wilfred Penley of Carville, Arizona

Just three owners from new, and entered from the Stewart Collection of Jaguar cars, in which it has resided since 2004

Matching numbers throughout, and boasting its factory paintwork, interior, and even weather equipment

Supplied with its original tools, jack, and a wealth of paperwork including photographs, heritage certificates and paperwork from events

This three-owner, American-market 1967 E-type is a very late Series I with the rare open headlights and was bought for the Stewart Collection in 2011. It was built on February 9th, 1967, in Opalescent Maroon with Black trim and triple carburettors (possibly by special order). It was delivered through Jaguar Cars New York to Wilfred Penley of Carville, Arizona. Penley sold the E-type to Carl Menoli in Gilbert, Arizona, who fitted new chrome wheels with stainless spokes and then parked it in an underground garage, where it remained for thirty years before it was offered for sale and purchased by our vendor with 36,631 miles on the clock. Once the dust was cleaned off, the condition of the Jaguar was almost beyond belief—its paint and chrome had a high shine, the all-original interior exhibited minimal wear, and in many respects, it looked as if it was showroom-fresh. On arrival in Britain, the E-type underwent some cursory checks and a service, including the renewal of the handbrake pads, and it promptly passed an M.O.T. A few weeks later, it was driven from our vendor’s home in Scotland to the Goodwood Revival (524 miles).

In 2017, it was driven to the British Classic Car Meeting in St. Moritz, where it deservedly won Best in Show. The vendor tells us, “This was the highlight of my E-type ownership, with over 300 British cars of all makes, including twenty E-types, in attendance. Having driven there, two judges approached us when we’d just arrived, and said, ‘Can we inspect your car? It looks incredibly original. Has it got its original toolkit? Yes… I see it’s got a kinked bonnet strip, because it’s a three-piece unit, and that’s how it came out the factory.’ Then one of them said, ‘I have been judging E-types for fifty-two years. It’s my dying wish to find one with self-closing doors.’ When he tried both doors, he was gobsmacked to say the least! When the chairman got up to present the awards, he said, ‘We have made history. After twenty-four years of this event, a car has won twenty-five points ahead. Normally, there are five points between first and third. You are very lucky to own, in my view, the best E-type in the world.’ After the event, three people wanted to buy it at a huge price, but I said it was not for sale, so if you ever want to sell it… advertise it in Switzerland!”

Offered now with just 67,000 miles from new, the E-type has survived with its original tools, jack, a wealth of documentation, and owner’s manual, and even Jaguar’s test driver, the late Norman Dewis, remarked upon the extent of its originality.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
