This 1968 Jaguar XKE Series 1.5 roadster was purchased new by the seller in May 1968 from racing driver and salesman John “Skip” Barber III at Anderson Foreign Motors in Woburn, Massachusetts. The car was refurbished around 2016 and is finished in British Racing Green over black leather upholstery. Powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission, the vehicle is equipped with triple SU carburetors, an S1-spec distributor, PerTronix electronic ignition, a black soft top, 15″ wire-spoke wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, three-point seatbelts, a heater, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. Sound-deadening insulation has been added, and other modifications include halogen headlights, LED secondary lighting, intermittent windshield wipers, footwell lights, a “dead pedal” footrest, a fuel pump cut-off switch, and a USB power outlet. The roadster has received four best-in-class awards at Jaguar Clubs of North America Concours d’Elegance events, and it also earned Best in Show at the Jaguar Association of New England Concours d’Elegance in August 2025 with a score of 99.8 points. The seller tells us that he has performed most of the tasks on the car, with the exception of body work. Now showing 76k miles, this Series 1.5 roadster is offered with its 1968 sales invoice, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, manufacturer’s literature, workshop manuals, more than 50 years of service records, spare and removed parts, a car cover, and a clean Massachusetts title in the seller’s name.
The vehicle invoice from Anderson Foreign Motors is dated May 15, 1968. Salesman Skip Barber is noted on the document and signed off that the total sale amount of $5,500 was paid in full on that date.
Finished from the factory in Opalescent Maroon, this car was stripped, patched, repaired, and repainted in British Racing Green in 2016. The chrome bumpers and overriders were replaced along with the windshield and the dual side mirrors. Lucas PL headlights with halogen bulbs and LED secondary lighting are fitted, and other equipment includes a black soft top, a black top boot, a louvered clamshell hood, triple windshield wipers, bright trim, a reverse light, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller states that the car was involved in a “fender bender” in 1971 and was subsequently repaired.
Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels are secured by rounded knock-offs and are mounted with 185R15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors. The rotors were refinished during the refurbishment and the parking-brake components were rebuilt, and the seller tells us that the following items were replaced:
Brake calipers
Brake pads
Brake servo
Brake master cylinder
Wheel hubs
Shocks
Ball joints
Universal joints
The cabin features bucket seats that have been reupholstered in black leather, and the color-coordinated door panels, carpeting, and other trim have been replaced. Sound-deadening insulation was added during the refurbishment, and other modifications include intermittent windshield wipers, footwell lights, a “dead pedal” footrest, a hidden USB power outlet, a fuel pump cut-off switch, and a removable GPS screen holder. Other interior appointments include three-point seatbelts, a center console, a heater, a sliding rearview mirror, a locking glovebox, and a passenger-side grab handle. The Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio stopped working years ago.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer, while a clock and auxiliary gauges for battery voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level are located at the center of the dashboard. The clock is a replacement unit. The five-digit odometer shows 76k miles, all of which have been added under current ownership.
The 4.2-liter inline-six was previously equipped with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and has been updated with a triple-SU setup. The engine was removed, stripped, and cleaned during the refurbishment, and the following work was performed:
Replaced pistons and rings
Replaced connecting-rod bearings
Replaced timing chains and tensioners
Adjusted valves
Rebuilt distributor to S1 specifications
Installed PerTronix ignition
Replaced other ignition-system parts
Replaced radiator core
Replaced engine mounts and bushings
Replaced or flushed fuel lines and hydraulic lines
Repainted fuel tank
Replaced exhaust system and porcelain manifolds
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a full-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission. The clutch disc and cylinders were replaced during the refurbishment.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers as well as the build and dispatch dates. The seller’s name is listed on both the “Prepared for” and “First owner” lines.
Removed and spare parts, a smaller 14″ steering wheel, two storage cubbies, a car cover, and an adapter to mount a Bluetooth speaker will accompany the vehicle along with manufacturer’s literature, workshop manuals, tools, and more than 50 years of service records. Awards garnered by the car are not included in the sale.
