Finished in Opalescent Silver Blue with Blue leather upholstery, 'HPT 888C' is understood to have been "extensively restored in the 1980s". Described by the vendor as being in "excellent" (bodywork, paintwork) or "good" (engine, electrical equipment, gearbox, interior trim) condition, this appealing Jaguar comes with an insurance valuation for £48,000 and fresh MOT.

Hi all,

I now own this car and am looking to get it 'up to scratch'. I have had the car at home now for a few weeks and am slowly going through it, first job was a slight misfire, which was a tight exhaust tappet clearance. All sorted now for a few hours work, a new shim and a few gaskets! The rev counter isn't working, wiring is good but generator has zero output, time for a new one...

Next job is to go through the electrics which I am currently doing. The car is a 1965 and has the wrong alternator wiring. The ignition light should be actually an oil warning light (additional wire for oil switch is still there but no switch, easy fix) and someone has fitted a 3AW Warning light canister system, which is incorrect, but the car is actually charging. I am in the process of re-wiring the alternator/regulator back to std using correct braided cables of course!

No interior/dash lights is a faulty interior light switch and a few new bulbs, no armrests were present, new ones ordered. The car has had a 'typo' on the engine number section in the V5C for years, it reads 'YE 3201-9'. The engine number is of course 7E 3201-9. I didn't realise that 'Y' and '7' are very close on the UK keyboard, so that is being sorted now. Whoever restored the car even stamped the chassis plate 'YE'!

The chassis plate had no gearbox or body number stamped on it. I have been searching over the car and have (hopefully) found the original body number written on the back of the dash. The number I found is 4E21267. I will search behind the glovebox as well to be certain. I am sure this is correct as it kind of aligns with other cars either side of mine, plus I have a full set of photos from 1983 when the car was fully restored initially, which show the dash as being left in during the restoration. Anyway a Heritage certificate will be applied for when I have the gearbox number which will tell if that's correct or not.

Brakes are binding, it's the fronts. The rear had an overhaul about 5 years ago when the pistons were replaced along with all the IRS rubbers/mounts. I will remove the front calipers and check them before I drive it for any length of time. It has ZEUS front calipers and I have spoken to them, and seal kits/pistons are available, so at worst its a rebuild which is no stress...

I am doing a vlog which I am posting on ETYPEUK.COM forum.

I will continue to update this site also.

Steve.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
