Seller Redcaps

A charismatic and iconic grand tourer, this Jaguar E-Type Series 3 has been converted from a 2+2 coupe to a soft-top convertible, and from right to left-hand drive.

It is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.3-litre V12, delivering 272bhp to the rear wheels through an upgraded five-speed manual transmission.

The accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate confirms that it was delivered to the UK via Henlys Ltd and Hoddesdon Motor Co in 1973, with white paintwork and a dark blue interior.

The roadster conversion was carried out in December 1990 by English Classic Cars using a donor car (which cost over £13,000 at the time) alongside a left-hand drive conversion. The seller notes that this E-Type is still a ‘numbers matching’ car, due to the original chassis and engine being rebuilt and reused, though the gearbox was replaced with a five-speed unit.

A mechanical rebuild was completed, and the car was resprayed and re-trimmed before being delivered to its owner in Monaco with 1 Km (and with a documented purchase price of £83,000), with the odometer evidently having been zeroed after the work was completed.

It is reported that the car then spent the next 15 years in Monaco and Spain, before being repatriated in late 2005, and re-registered with the DVLA in March 2006.

The seller notes that the car was thoroughly inspected by J.D. Classics in 2006, with invoices totalling nearly £10,000.

The odometer shows 17,628 km, which is understood to be the genuine distance since the Roadster conversion; though the car’s total chassis mileage is not known.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

This E-Type is now finished in Ruby Red with a black soft-top roof, over a tan leather-trimmed interior punctuated by an elegant wood dashboard.

It rides on a set of 15-inch chrome wire wheels with three-eared knock-offs, fitted with Pirelli P4000 tyres.

Equipment includes a three-spoke wood-trimmed steering wheel, Smiths gauges, an analogue clock, heater and ventilation controls, retro-fitted electric windows, and an Alpine stereo.

The car will be supplied with its original handbook, a collection of invoices and MOT certificates, its Jaguar Heritage Trust production record trace certificate, a spare wheel, and photographs of the car’s delivery to Monaco.

CONDITION

Specific notes from the seller include: the paint was ceramic coated this year; there are some very small road chips.

The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 22 May 2025 at an indicated 17,601 km, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories.

SERVICE HISTORY

In August 2025, Farringtons fitted a second-hand manifold, and changed the inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets.

In December 2024, the XK specialist Twyford Motors replaced the water hoses, fan otter switch, coolant, fuel hoses (now E10-compatible), trumpet clamps and bushes, radius arm bushes, rear subframe bushes and oil pressure sender. The carburettors were tuned and cleaned, and the needles were replaced. A fan override switch was installed, the hazard and interior map light switches were repaired, the heated controls were freed off, and a compression test was completed.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
