Body Colour Heather

The 1973 Jaguar E-Type in Heather is one of the rarest, most distinctive factory-specification variants of the iconic British sports car. Introduced for the final Series 3 generation, "Heather" is an authentic, period-correct, metallic dusty pink hue that Jaguar offered for a very limited window starting in 1973. It represented British Leyland's push into bold, unconventional 1970s colours alongside shades like Greensand and Turquoise. Because it was highly polarising at launch, very few buyers ordered it, making original Heather-painted E-Types incredibly rare and highly sought-after by collectors today.

From the factory, this colour was most famously paired with a contrasting Cerise (cherry red) leather interior and matching carpets but, happily, that is not the case here with this stunning example graced with a superb interior in Maroon leather.

Beautifully presented, this example has formed part of the Collection since 2022 and the Jaguar Trace Certificate confirms it was manufactured on 20th May 1973 in Heather with manual transmission and sold through the Bolton Motor Company in Bolton, Lancashire. The history file contains invoices from marque specialists CMC Ltd. and XK Engineering (April 2002) who carried out bodywork repairs to the wings and sills. Since forming part of the Collection, the E-type has been completely refurbished and the extensive list of work includes an engine rebuild with multiple invoices from marque specialists covering parts including, Rob Beere Racing oil pump, timing chain, RBR ‘stretch-type rear crank seal, crankshaft thrust bearing and big end set, Stromberg carburettor refurbishment, alternator service, flywheel ring gear, headlight assemblies, brake calipers and new wire wheels. A full list of the work carried out is in the car's history file available at our Documents Desk.

Superbly finished in this amazing one-year-only colour, this impressive, manual gearbox V12 2+2 is beautifully restored and as mechanically sorted as possible.

Historically, many owners repainted Heather E-Types to more traditional colours like British Racing Green or Red because the pink shade was initially considered "uncool". Today, the market has completely reversed with surviving, matching-numbers factory Heather cars attracting massive attention due to their extreme scarcity and pure 1970s nostalgia.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
