According to the Heritage Certificate, a copy of which is supplied with the car, this E-type was the 494th right-hand drive fixed-head coupe and left the Browns Lane factory on May 3, 1962. The original colour scheme was Carmen Red with red leather upholstery and the car was distributed through London dealer Henlys, with the UK registration mark RYE 10.
Just how the E-type came to reside in Australia isn’t known, but the car was purchased by the current Sydney owner - a Jaguar enthusiast and collector - as a solid restoration project locally some years ago. The car has been kept in dry storage ever since and, with too many projects on the go, our vendor has decided the time has come to let someone else restore this desirable Series 1 3.8 FHC back to its former glory.
Retaining the original engine (including both the block and cylinder head) and correctly stamped on the frame, the E-types original ID plate has been removed but is supplied with the car. Still finished in the original red colour, the interior has - at some point - been re-trimmed in black and is substantially correct and complete, including the all-important early seats and trim often replaced on these cars.
The monocoque appears to be structurally sound and rust-free apart from some superficial surface corrosion in places. The engine turns freely and the steering is connected, although the column needs locating. A number of parts come with the project, as shown in the photo gallery.
A relatively straightforward restoration, the E-type could either be returned to the original factory colours or perhaps upgraded in the style of the Eagle cars from the UK or even be a suitable candidate for a semi-lightweight conversion? Showing just under 90,000 miles on the clock, the Jaguar will be sold unregistered.
