The car left the factory finished in black and was repainted its current shade of gray in 1987. Details include a blue soft top, a louvered clamshell hood, covered headlights, dual center-exit exhaust outlets, and wrap-around chrome bumpers with overriders and front and rear grille guards. Paint chips are shown in the gallery below. The seller notes a bend in the antenna, and a dent in the front driver’s side was repaired in preparation for the sale.
Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 195/75 Michelin XA4 Radial X tires. Braking is handled by servo-assisted four-wheel discs. The steering column bushing was replaced in November 2022.
The cockpit features bucket seats that were retrimmed during the refurbishment along with the dashboard, door panels, and shift boot. Appointments include color-coordinated carpeting, an aluminum-trimmed center stack and console, an open glovebox, and lap belts.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer, both of which were repaired in 1989. Auxiliary gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and amperage are mounted in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows 10k miles. True mileage is unknown.
The 3.8-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors that were repaired in 2007. The engine was rebuilt as part of the 1987 refurbishment and was overhauled again in 2003. Service in 2022 included cleaning the carburetor floats, repairing the fuel tank and choke, and replacing the battery as well as the fuel pump, filter, and sending unit.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission that was rebuilt in 1987 along with the clutch and driveshaft. The clutch assembly was replaced and oil leaks were repaired in 2007. Rust is noted on the exhaust system.
The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date of February 2, 1962, and lists factory serial numbers and colors as well as distribution through Jaguar Cars of New York.
The chassis tag shown above displays a serial number 876682, while the California title lists the VIN as J62876682.
The car is being offered on behalf of an estate with a title in the name of the family trust.

Auction Type Reserve
This early Series 1 1962 Jaguar E-type Convertible (or correctly, Open Two-Seater, or OTS) is said to have been a California car from new that was previously owned for 42 years and restored in the 1980s. The seller purchased the Jaguar in 2024 and has spent the past two years completely refreshing the car both mechanically and cosmetically. He says, “the Jaguar shows as new,” as can be seen in the photos provided. A Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate accompanies the sale, and all receipts and documentation from the original restoration, plus the car's service history, will be provided.
FEATURES
The restored, original 3.8-liter DOHC inline-six engine was rebuilt in the 2000s.
The four-speed Moss transmission provides synchronizers on the top three gears.
The original black exterior was refinished in Jaguar Opalescent Blue during the restoration.
A blue fabric top and boot were originally black.
The underside of the top and frame are finished in tan.
The original beige seats were rebuilt and covered in blue leather with seatbelts at restoration.
The embossed aluminum trim is in the correct original early Series 1 dot pattern.
All gauges and controls are complete, fully functioning, and appear “like new.”
The original wood-rim steering wheel has been restored.
All interior panels are restored in textured blue vinyl to match the original parts.
New blue carpet and new blue armacord have been installed, as well as a new trunk trim kit.
The underside of this E-type OTS presents very well, as does the engine.
New chrome wire wheels are mounted with new Diamond Back wide-whitewall tires.
The odometer reads 11,288 miles, likely from completion of the restoration.
