This 1962 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was distributed through Falvey Motor Sales Co. in Detroit to a Buick dealer in Dearborn, Michigan, and later acquired by the seller in 1984. It subsequently underwent a color change as part of a mid-1980s refurbishment as well as engine work in the late 2010s. Finished in silver with a tan soft top over red leather, the car is powered by a replacement 3.8-liter inline-six equipped with triple Weber DCOE carburetors and a stainless-steel exhaust system. Shifting is through a Moss four-speed manual transmission linked with a limited-slip differential, and further equipment includes an independent suspension with aftermarket shocks as well as power-assisted disc brakes and 15″ wire-spoke wheels. Inside, bucket seats are accompanied by a wood-rimmed steering wheel, textured aluminum trim, and Smiths instrumentation. This XKE Series I roadster is now offered at no reserve with a delivery label from Jaguar Cars Inc., a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, manufacturer’s literature, a collection of spare parts, and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name listing the car as a 1963 model.
Series I E-Types were equipped with covered headlights as well as taillights mounted above the wraparound chrome rear bumpers. This example left the factory finished in Cream and was repainted silver as part of the aforementioned mid-1980s refurbishment.
The car wears a replacement tan soft top, the louvered clamshell bonnet has been repaired with body filler, the triple windshield wipers are not working, and the license plate and back-up lights are not hooked up. The seller recommends rebuilding the washer fluid pump and also notes rust on the underside of the hood as well as bubbling on the passenger-side door.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with older Coker redline tires that require replacement. Koni shocks and larger torsion bars are fitted up front, and aftermarket coilover shocks have been installed out back. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors, and the seller states that the brake calipers have been sleeved and that braided stainless-steel hoses and remote rear bleeders have been added. The tires make contact with the edge of the bonnet when at full lock.
The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in red leather that are paired with latch-and-link belts. Matching upholstery extends to the center console and door panels and is complemented by textured aluminum trim. Further appointments a sliding rearview mirror, a heater, and hand-crank windows. The Pioneer AM/FM cassette stereo does not work, the leather upholstery is worn, and rust is visible in the floor pans.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 59k miles, approximately 25k of which were added under current ownership. The horn and dash lights are not working, and the seller states that wiring repairs may be required.
The 3.8-liter inline-six block was replaced under previous ownership, and a refurbished cylinder head from Terry’s Jaguar Parts was installed in 2018. Additional work in 2018 is noted to have included installation of a high-capacity oil pump and a large-bore oil pickup pipe as well as replacement piston rings, bearings, and connecting rod bolts. The flywheel has reportedly been machined, and the engine is further equipped with triple Weber DCOE carburetors, an aluminum radiator, a high-torque starter, and a stainless-steel exhaust system. The seller recommends tuning the carburetors.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Moss four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The seller notes that upgraded engine mounts have been added, the transmission mounts are made of polyurethane, and the clutch slave cylinder was recently replaced. They also report rust on various underside components.
A document from Jaguar Cars Inc. lists that the car was distributed through Falvey Motor Sales Co. in Detroit to Holbrook Buick Sales in Dearborn, Michigan, with a total suggested retail price of $5,985. The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers as well as the build and dispatch dates.
