This 1964 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was refurbished after being acquired by the seller’s grandfather in 2002, and it was inherited by the seller in 2018. The car is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six linked to a 5-speed manual and a limited-slip differential. Finished in Opalescent Maroon over tan leather, the car is equipped with a tan soft top, 15″ wire-spoke wheels, power-assisted Wilwood disc brakes, triple Weber carburetors, an aftermarket exhaust system, and an Alpine CD stereo. This XKE Series I roadster is now offered with the owner’s manual, service records, a car cover, and a clean Arizona title in the seller’s name.

The Series I E-Types were equipped with covered headlights and taillights mounted above the chrome rear bumpers. This example is finished in Opalescent Maroon and was repainted during the refurbishment, at which time the doors, front hood, lower rear quarter panels, sills, and floors were replaced. A replacement tan soft top was also installed. There is a dent on the driver’s door and paint blemishes on the hood. The seller notes that the passenger door is stiff and both doors require firm pressure to close.

The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with 205/70 Bridgestone Turanza tires that should be replaced due to age. Braking is provided by four-wheel Wilwood discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors.

The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in tan leather along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Interior appointments include black vinyl dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, an Alpine CD stereo, aftermarket speakers, lap belts, and a heater.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer was reset to zero at the time of the refurbishment and now shows 5,600 miles.

The 3.8-liter inline-six was rebuilt and fitted with triple Weber carburetors and manifolds in 2002. The wiring harness was also replaced at that time. The seller notes an oil leak, hard starts after sitting for long periods of time, and an intermittent after-burn of fuel after shutoff.

Cylinder head stamping RA3745-9 corresponding number is stamped on the block and listed on the chassis plate.

A five-speed manual transmission has been installed, and power is sent to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential. An aftermarket exhaust system has been installed. Corrosion is noted on the underside.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
