This 1964 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was ordered new by the current owner’s mother in late 1963 and shipped from the UK to Detroit, Michigan, and has since remained in the family. The car is finished in Opalescent Dark Green with a tan soft top over beige leather and is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six fitted with triple SU carburetors that is mated to a Moss four-speed manual transmission. It rides on 15″ wire-spoke wheels and is further equipped with power-assisted disc brakes and a limited-slip differential. Further details include enclosed headlights, triple windshield wipers, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. This XKE Series I roadster is now offered by Sierra Classic Sportscar—a BaT Local Partner—out of California with purchase, shipping, and service records along with a clean California title in the owner’s name.
The Series I E-Types were equipped with covered headlights as well as taillights mounted above the chrome rear bumpers, and this example left the factory finished in Opalescent Dark Green. The car wears bullet-style mirrors on the louvered clamshell hood and also has a tan soft top, a luggage rack, triple windshield wipers, and wraparound bumpers. The soft top was replaced in June 2005.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs, while braking is handled by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors. Vredestein Sprint Classic tires were mounted in January 2014, and suspension work in December 2014 involved replacing the shocks and front suspension and radius arms bushings as well as the rear spring assemblies and subframes mounts. The rear brake calipers were changed in April 2015.
The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in beige leather along with a color-coordinated center console, door panels, and carpets. Interior appointments include black vinyl dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, and a heater. Wear is visible on the seats and center armrest.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer as well as a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. A handwritten mileage log notes that the odometer was replaced in July 1967 at approximately 31k miles and the replacement unit was reset to zero. The installed five-digit odometer now shows 21k miles.
The 3.8-liter inline-six was equipped from the factory with triple SU carburetors and was rated at 265 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Recent service has included the following:
December 2014 – Replaced water pump pulley, pinion seal, and engine mounts
May 2015 – PerTronix electronic ignition kit installed
July 2017 – Gear-reduction starter installed
March 2019 – Lucas ignition coil installed; carburetor and generator rebuilt; valve shims, valve cover gaskets, and camshaft seals changed
May 2019 – Electric fan wiring repaired, ignition wires replaced
The cylinder head stamp reads RA5721-9, which corresponds with the block stamp and engine bay tag.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Moss four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. A replacement clutch kit was installed in May 2015, and the clutch master cylinder was replaced in March 2016.
A collection of vehicle documentation including a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, a Manufacturer’s Warranty card, a February 1964–dated Bill of Sale, and other records is included in the sale.
A tool kit will also accompany the car along with a jack bag and a car cover.
