JAGUAR E TYPE 3.8 SERIES 1 FHC 1962 LHD

£85,000

A lovely old 'California' E Type. It is a totally rust free , undamaged and unrestored example that has just had a sympathetic rejuvenation. This consisted of a high quality 'bare metal' repaint in its original colour of Carmen red, reupholstered seats in black leather, new carpets, new clutch and a full mechanical inspection and rectification. It has a genuine mileage of 88,000 miles, two owners, drives superbly and is fitted with the later 4.2 full synchro gearbox. Matching numbers (apart from the gearbox) with Heritage Certificate, recently MOT'd with no advisories, NOVA certificate confirming all import duties have been paid and full UK registration.

Built in August 1962, it is the desirable 'aluminiun dash' model, with chrome wire wheels and Michelin XVS tyres. A competetively priced top 'driver quality' example, that is not absolutely perfect, but on the plus side, is not £150,000. A lot more fun than money in the bank (earning a pittance) and guaranteed to be an appreciating and enjoyable investment. Straightforward and inexpensive to convert to RHD if you are that way inclined.

Reg. Number UK Registered
Chassis Number 886665

Model E-Type

This lovely example is a matching numbers LHD U.S car that was originally delivered to Jaguar Motors New York in August 1962, ready for its first owner. Although delivered to the east coast the car spent most of its life in the dry states of the US, and since arriving in the UK in 2016 has undergone sympathetic renovation work. Included in this work was a bare metal re-spray to the original carmen red as well as having a new clutch and reupholstered seats fitted. The interior is genuinely very presentable, the original aluminium dashboard shows very little sign of wear as does the headlining and carpets. Showing a mere 88,000 miles on the odometer the car is in all round good condition; the body is straight and rust free and the engine bay is very clean. The history file that is supplied with the car includes many bills of maintenance work as well as a Jaguar heritage certificate and MoT. An exceptional early example ready to be driven on the open road or perhaps a future entrant in the ever popular tourist trophy racing series.

1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 FHC - Electric Conversion - LHD

This Jaguar E-Type Series 1 FHC has been converted into a full EV by ECOClassics, combining classic design with modern, zero-tailpipe-emissions performance.

Originally fitted with a 3.8-litre inline-six engine, it now features a bespoke 170kW (227bhp) electric drivetrain, driving the rear wheels via electric motors on the propshaft, with the original four-speed manual now functioning as a selector for Drive, Neutral, and Reverse.

The car retains many of its original mechanical and cosmetic components, with a discreet integration of the EV system, including cooling for the electric motor via the original radiator.

First delivered to the US in 1962, it was later imported into the UK, where it is now registered and has been owned by the seller for the last five years.

The odometer indicates 93,273 miles, though this is not warranted.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

This E-Type Series 1 FHC was converted into a full EV by ECOClassics, which consisted of a 600Nm, 170kW JJE electric motor being installed, alongside a matched inverter, 65kWh battery modules, and a bidirectional charger.

ECOClassics quotes an estimated driving range of around 200-280 miles.

The original dials remain in place and have been repurposed to display EV-specific readouts, including battery charge on the fuel gauge.

The manual gear lever remains operational as part of the selector system for the EV drivetrain, with status (D/N/R) shown on a display as seen in the photo gallery.

This example is finished in the bold hue of Carmen Red, over a black leather-trimmed interior, featuring textured metal inlays on the dashboard and transmission tunnel, and chrome trim highlights.

It rides on a set of 15-inch chrome cross-spoke wire wheels with two-spoke knock-offs, fitted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres.

Equipment includes a wood-rimmed steering wheel, Smiths gauges, a Radiomobile push-button radio, dashboard toggle switches, and heater and ventilation controls. The heater operates using the same control lever, but it is connected to an electric PTC heater that operates when the lever is lowered and the fan toggle switch is turned on.

The seller notes that the original radio is still present, but they are not aware of whether it is connected or still works.

The car is accompanied by two sets of keys, a tool roll, a knock-off tool, a Production Record Trace Certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust, a US certificate of title, an original Jaguar handbook, a conversion part list, wiring diagrams, and extensive invoices documenting the project.

Please note: while an HPI check shows a DVLA ‘Scrapped’ marker against the chassis number ‘886665’, the marker shows that this relates to a Volvo 240 GLT which shares this short serial number, and not the E-Type offered.

CONDITION

Specific notes from the seller include: a minor dent on the bonnet was repaired via the conversion company’s insurance after a workshop mishap. Rust was discovered and addressed in common E-Type areas where water drainage had been compromised prior to the restoration. The car has previously been repainted in its original colour. Inside, the seats were re-trimmed before the seller’s ownership.

The seller notes that the handbrake warning light occasionally flickers due to a possible loose earth.

The most recent MOT test was on 11 July 2023 at an indicated 91,352 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with advisories for slight play in both offside wheel bearings.

SERVICE HISTORY

The last workshop visit was in May 2025 by Automechanica Salvetti in Bordighera, Italy, which included a full lubrication of all the underbody components.

The EV conversion was fully completed in 2023 by ECOClassics.

During the conversion, the brake vacuum booster was rebuilt, a new front brake master cylinder was installed, as well as a new steering column bearing.

Additional work completed during the seller’s ownership includes rust repairs, suspension and steering refurbishment, replacement brake pads, brake discs and lines, servicing of the independent rear suspension, recoating of components, new OEM-style wheels and spanners, and a new 12V battery.
